Developing Graphic Medicine Collection- Workshop Leader: Matthew Noe (https://library.harvard.edu/staff/matthew-noe)

Delivered in Collaboration with RCSI University of Medicine & Health Sciences and Health Sciences Libraries Group

Target Group: All Librarians interested in Health & Comics - Registration €50/per delegate

Workshop Description: In the nearly two-decades since Ian Williams coined the term graphic medicine, the field has emerged as an important opportunity for health sciences librarianship. Where before comics were nonexistent or rare in health sciences libraries, limited only to those historical collections or the occasional consumer health collection, now they represent perhaps the largest area of growth for physical collections we’ve seen since the emergence of large digital collections. Development of these collections can reignite appreciation for the value of the physical library collection and space at a time when pressure to reduce our footprint has never been higher.

This workshop will provide both a base knowledge of graphic medicine collection development and an opportunity to begin work on a proposal for developing a collection for each participant’s home library. Workshop leader Matthew Noe will share some of the history of graphic medicine, the role of comics in libraries, and his experiences in creating multiple localized comics collections. From there, an outline of how to approach proposing, beginning, and sustaining a graphic medicine collection in library settings will be offered – first via a presentation and then, in the second half of the workshop, in a hands-on program. This hands-on element is designed to give participants a chance to answer key questions for their own proposal in a setting where they can get peer review and expert advise prior to presenting it to their library leadership.

Participants should come prepared to engage in conversation, in project planning, and in a few, low-stress, drawing activities – because if we are going to encourage our health sciences students and practitioners to draw, we have to be willing to as well. This workshop will be of highest value to those who are new to graphic medicine collecting, however, those who have already begun will still benefit from learning together with peers, an expert, and from the chance to work on their future planning.

Venue: RCSI University of Medicine & Health Sciences, Dublin 2

Start time: 10:00 - 10:45 Registration & Tea/Coffee, RCSI 26 York Street

10:45 - 13:00 Workshop (includes time to move the group to the training location), RCSI Mercer Building (10 minute walk from York Street)
